Lip Blush Aftercare

Your lip blush is a cosmetic tattoo — proper aftercare determines how well the pigment heals and how long your results last. Expect the full healing process to take 4-6 weeks, with a touch-up at 6-8 weeks to perfect your colour and shape.

First 48 Hours — Swelling Phase

Swelling is completely normal and expected. Your lips may feel tight, tender, and appear 40-50% darker than the final result. The colour will look very saturated — this is temporary.

Avoid

  • Touching or pressing on your lips
  • Kissing or any contact with the lip area
  • Eating spicy, salty, or acidic foods
  • Drinking through straws
  • Applying lipstick, gloss, or lip balm (unless instructed)
  • Hot drinks and soups
  • Swimming, saunas, and steam
  • Direct sunlight on the lips

Do

  • Blot lips gently with clean tissue if weeping
  • Drink water through the side of your mouth
  • Eat soft, room-temperature foods
  • Sleep elevated to reduce swelling
  • Take ibuprofen if needed for swelling
  • Use a clean pillowcase (change daily)

Days 3-7 — Peeling Phase

This is the most important phase for pigment retention. Your lips will begin to flake and peel as the surface layer of skin sheds. The colour underneath may look very light or patchy — this is completely normal.

Day 3-4

Tightness and dryness begin

Lips feel dry and may crack slightly at the corners. Apply a thin layer of the aftercare balm provided by your technician if instructed. Do not over-moisturise.

Day 4-5

Peeling starts

Flaky skin begins to shed. This is the top layer of pigment coming off. Never pick, pull, or peel — let it fall away naturally, or you risk pulling pigment from the dermis and creating uneven patches.

Day 6-7

Peeling completes

Most flaking is done. Lips may appear lighter than expected. The colour is still developing beneath the surface and will bloom over the coming weeks.

Days 7-14 — Colour Settling

Your lips may look as though the pigment has disappeared entirely. This is sometimes called the "ghosting phase" and is one of the most common concerns our clients at Canley Vale raise during healing. Rest assured — the pigment is settling into the deeper layers of skin and the true colour will gradually emerge over 2-4 weeks.

Week 2

Colour begins returning

A soft wash of colour becomes visible as the healed skin becomes more transparent. The shade is lighter and more natural than the initial application.

Week 3-4

True colour reveals

The final result becomes apparent. Some areas may appear lighter than others — this is normal and exactly what the touch-up appointment at 6-8 weeks addresses.

Week 6-8

Touch-up appointment

Your technician will assess the healed result, correct any uneven areas, adjust colour intensity, and refine the shape. This session is essential for a polished, long-lasting outcome.

Foods & Activities to Avoid

What you eat and do during the first 7-10 days directly affects pigment retention and healing quality.

Spicy Foods

Chilli, hot sauce, and spiced dishes irritate healing lip tissue and can cause inflammation

Acidic Foods

Citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegar, and pickled foods can sting and slow healing

Salty Foods

Chips, soy sauce, and cured meats draw moisture from the lips and increase dryness

Intense Exercise

Heavy sweating introduces bacteria to the healing area and increases swelling

Also avoid alcohol for 48 hours (thins blood, increases swelling), smoking (introduces bacteria, dries lips), and swimming or soaking in water for at least 10 days.

Recommended Aftercare Products

  • Aftercare balm (provided) Apply a thin layer only when instructed by your technician — dry healing is preferred for the first few days
  • Fragrance-free, gentle lip balm After the peeling phase, use a simple balm like Aquaphor or pure vitamin E to keep lips moisturised
  • SPF lip balm (after full healing) UV exposure is the number one cause of premature lip blush fading — apply SPF 30+ daily once healed
  • Soft-bristle toothbrush Brush teeth carefully to avoid bumping healing lips — use a gentle toothpaste without whitening agents

Pro tip: Dry healing (no ointment for the first 3-4 days) typically produces the best pigment retention. Only apply aftercare balm if your technician specifically recommends it for your skin type.

Common Aftercare Questions

Why do my lips look so dark right after treatment?

The pigment oxidises on the surface, making it appear 40-50% darker than the healed result. Think of it like a temporary tattoo sitting on top of the skin. The true colour is the softer shade that emerges after peeling.

The colour seems to have vanished after peeling — did it work?

Yes. The "ghosting phase" happens to nearly everyone. The pigment is in the dermis, hidden beneath a fresh layer of skin. Colour gradually resurfaces over weeks 2-4 as the new skin becomes translucent.

When can I wear lipstick again?

Wait at least 10 days, and ideally until all peeling is complete. When you do resume lip products, use clean applicators and avoid matte liquid lipsticks that require rubbing to remove — opt for gentle formulas.

How long will my lip blush last?

Lip blush results typically last 2-4 years, depending on your skin type, lifestyle, and sun exposure. Oily skin tends to fade faster. Annual colour refreshes are popular across Western Sydney to maintain vibrancy.

When to Contact Your Technician

Some discomfort and visual changes are expected during healing. However, reach out if you notice:

  • Swelling that worsens after 48 hours instead of improving
  • Blistering, oozing, or pus around the lip area
  • Severe pain that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief
  • Signs of infection — increasing redness, warmth, or fever
  • An allergic reaction such as extreme itching or rash spreading beyond the lips

Mild swelling, tightness, and tenderness in the first 48 hours are entirely normal and not cause for concern.
