First 10 Days (Critical Healing Period)
Your skin is healing from a cosmetic tattoo procedure. The pigment is settling into the upper layers of skin, and any disruption during this phase can cause pigment loss, patchiness, or infection.
Avoid
- Water on the brow area (shower carefully)
- Sweating (gym, running, hot yoga)
- Steam, saunas, and hot tubs
- Makeup on or around the brows
- Picking, scratching, or peeling flaking skin
- Sun exposure and tanning beds
- Swimming pools, ocean, and spas
- Facials, chemical peels, or Botox near brows
- Sleeping face-down on your brows
Do
- Gently blot brows with a clean tissue if they weep
- Apply the aftercare balm provided (thin layer only)
- Sleep on your back, elevated if possible
- Keep the area clean and dry
- Let scabs and flakes fall off naturally
- Be patient — colour will lighten and even out
Days 3-10: The Flaking Phase
Around day 3-4, you will notice your brows starting to scab and flake. This is the most important phase to leave alone. Here is what to expect day by day:
Dark and defined
Brows look bold and sharp. Colour is at its darkest — significantly darker than the final result. Some redness and tenderness around the area is normal. Blot gently with a tissue every few hours to absorb any lymph fluid.
Scabbing begins
A thin layer of scabbing forms over the brows. They may feel tight and itchy. Do not scratch or pick at them. The temptation is real, but pulling scabs removes pigment and creates patchy results.
Flaking and fading
Scabs begin to shed naturally, revealing lighter skin underneath. Your brows may look patchy or faded — this is normal. The colour is still settling beneath the surface and will reappear as healing completes.
Colour returns
Most flaking is complete. The true colour gradually emerges over the next 2-4 weeks. You can carefully resume normal skincare and light brow makeup if needed.
Long-Term Care (After Healing)
Once your brows have fully healed and you have completed your touch-up appointment, maintaining your results is straightforward:
Apply SPF to your brows
UV exposure is the number one cause of premature pigment fading. Use a mineral sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on your brow area every day, even on overcast days.
Avoid harsh exfoliants
Keep retinol, glycolic acid, and physical scrubs away from the brow area. These accelerate skin turnover and push pigment out faster.
Schedule a colour refresh
Ombre powder brows last 1-3 years depending on your skin type, lifestyle, and sun exposure. A colour refresh every 12-18 months keeps your brows looking their best.
Products to Use and Avoid
What you put on and near your brows during healing directly affects pigment retention:
Retinol and Retinoids
Accelerates skin cell turnover and pushes pigment out — avoid near brows permanently
AHA/BHA Acids
Glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acids fade pigment — keep away from the brow area
Hydrogen Peroxide
Bleaches pigment — avoid any antiseptic or acne product containing peroxide near brows
Oil-Based Cleansers
Oil breaks down pigment over time — use micellar water or oil-free cleanser instead
Recommended Aftercare Products
- Aftercare balm (provided) Apply a thin layer with a clean cotton tip during the first 10 days to keep skin supple without over-moisturising
- Mineral SPF 30+ Essential for long-term pigment protection — apply to brows daily once healed
- Oil-free cleanser Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser for the brow area after the initial 10-day healing period
- Clean cotton tips Use for applying balm instead of your fingers — reduces bacteria transfer during healing
Important: Less is more with aftercare balm. A thin, barely-there layer prevents scabs from drying out without suffocating the skin. Over-moisturising can pull pigment out and cause poor retention.
Common Aftercare Questions
My brows are so dark — did something go wrong?
No. Immediately after the procedure, your brows will look 30-40% darker than the final result. This is because the pigment is sitting on top of the skin along with oxidised blood and lymph fluid. Once scabbing occurs and the surface layer sheds, the colour softens significantly. At our Canley Vale studio, we calibrate pigment knowing it will fade — trust the process.
My brows look patchy after the scabs fell off — is this normal?
Completely normal. After scabs shed, the skin underneath is still healing and the pigment takes 4-6 weeks to fully settle. Colour will continue to reappear and even out during this time. If any patchy areas remain after full healing, they are addressed at your touch-up appointment.
When can I exercise again?
Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 10 days. Sweat contains salt and bacteria that can irritate healing skin and push pigment out. Light walks are fine from day 3, but anything that makes you sweat should wait. This is especially important for clients across Western Sydney who train outdoors in warm weather.
Do I really need a touch-up appointment?
Yes. A touch-up at 4-6 weeks after your initial appointment is a standard part of the ombre powder brows process, not a sign that anything went wrong. The first session creates the foundation, and the touch-up perfects colour density, fills any areas where pigment did not retain, and fine-tunes the shape. Skipping the touch-up means your results will not last as long.
When to Contact Your Technician
Some discomfort and visual changes are part of normal healing, but reach out if you experience:
- Excessive redness, swelling, or warmth that worsens after day 3
- Yellow or green discharge (signs of infection)
- Severe itching or burning that does not subside
- Blistering or raised bumps around the brow area
- Fever or feeling unwell following the procedure
Mild redness and tenderness for the first 1-2 days is completely normal. Light itching during the flaking phase (days 3-10) is also expected and is a sign that your skin is healing.
